RIDING Is a glow-inducing aerobic exercise

When we ride, our heart rate increases and we burn oxygen faster. In response, we increase and deepen our breathing, pulling more oxygen into the body, which is swiftly pumped around by the heart. That richly-oxygenated blood makes our skin glow. The ultimate reward post-workout.

SPINNING stimulates the production of collagen

Collagen is the protein that gives our skin its youthful elasticity. The slightly startling news is that our collagen levels start to drop in our mid-twenties – so, from that point on, our skin starts to become thinner (and more prone to wrinkles). But a regular, dedicated indoor cycling routine stimulates collagen production: boosting the skin. And research from Canada suggests that whatever age we are, endurance exercise will benefit our skin. Do we need anymore encouragement to get back on the bike?!

EXERCISE protects our mitochondria

Mitochondria are the tiny structures found in our cells that help us to convert glucose to energy. When they get damaged, they become less effective at protecting our skin (and the rest of our bodies) from the damaging effect of free radicals (the waste products of our bodies’ chemical reactions). As free radicals build up, they can cause skin damage. But American researchers have found that aerobic exercise helps to counteract mitochondrial decay.

WORKING OUT regulates your levels of cortisol

Cortisol is a hormone. We need it – it has loads of important functions in the body, lots of them connected with energy and metabolism. But, when we produce more cortisol than we need, it causes problems: including glycation, a collagen-damaging process that can increase the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Working out helps to regulate our cortisol levels, preventing over-production and helping us sleep (another factor in gorgeous skin).
